West Village Meeting House
The West Village Meeting House is the home to the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church and the local Jewish community. It is several miles from the center of Brattleboro and hidden from the main road by a hill with pine trees. The church's interim minister at the time of the shooting was the Rev. Deborah Mero, who was present on the day of the shooting, but was not inside the church when the fatal assault occurred.
Woody apparently chose to seek sanctuary in this church because he knew Unitarian Universalist Churches provided sanctuary to victims of state-sponsored persecution in war-torn wars in Central America in the 1980s, in states supported by the U.S. and whose refugees were summarily denied asylum status by the government.
